Joe Alwyn was born on 21 February 1991 in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England. He comes from an educated and respected family where his mother is a psychiatrist and his father is a documentary filmmaker. Although a member of the Working People family, he is the great-grandson of the composer of his time, William Alvin.
Joe Alwyn attended the City of London School and at the age of 13 took guitar lessons at his school for some time. He practiced football and rugby in school and although despite an introverted personality, he secretly wanted to be an actor since childhood. This got him enrolled in the National Youth Theater in his late teens.
Continuing his education in English Literature at the University of Bristol, he appeared in two student productions at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
