Coulibaly started playing football with Saint-Dié when he was only eight years old. Four years later, he switched to Metz, but in 2006, he went back to his old club. Coulibaly moved back to Metz in 2009.

On 23 August 2012, Swiss team Luzern defeated Genk 2–1 in the first leg of a two-leg UEFA Europa Championship play-off. This was Coulibaly’s first game with Genk. Between 6 October and 19 October 2013, he scored two goals in two matches. On 2 July 2014, he signed a five-year contract with Serie A club SSC Napoli for around £6.5 million.

He did so with a powerful volley in a 2–2 draw in the league.

On 17 June 2020, Coulibaly continued to play against Juventus in the final of the Coppa Italia. After a scoreless draw, Napoli won the game 4–2 on penalties. He was part of the Senegal team that went to the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
In May 2018, Coulibaly was named in Senegal’s 23-man squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. After that, Coulibaly was selected as a centre-back for the national team’s 26-man squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
