Laura Harrier was born on 28 March 1990 in Chicago, Illinois, United States. She was born and raised in the city of Evanston, Illinois. His father, Temujin Harrier, is African American, and his mother, Linda, is of Polish and English descent. William, his younger brother, is his only brother.
Laura attended Evanston Township High School, where she studied acting and played sports. In high school, she took an interest in fashion and was voted the best dressed.
After graduating from high school in 2008, Harrier moved to the New York University Gallatin School of Individual Study to study art history at New York University.

Laura Harrier started modeling at the age of 17 after being discovered by a location scout who was a friend of her mother. Her first acting appearance was as Destiny Evans in the online revival of the American soap opera One Life to Live, while she was a student at William Asper Studio (2013).
Shanelle Edmonds starred in the original series and was offered the opportunity to reproduce in the revival, but turned it down; Harrier took over the role after the auditions.
Harrier then appeared as Amber in the television series Unforgettable (2014) and the film The Last Five Years (2014), in which she played Jamie, played by Jamie Jordan, as a young woman who has an affair with Jamie.

Harrier also took part in a lease course at New York University, where he is a film professor. Harrier was nominated for a Black Reel Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture for his work in the film.
