Doucet worked as a freelancer in West Africa for Canadian media and the BBC from 1983 to 1988. This time served as a springboard for a long-term career with the BBC. Doucet first reported from Pakistan in 1988, and was stationed in Kabul from late 1988 to late 1989, covering the withdrawal and subsequent consequences of Soviet forces. From 1989 to 1993, she was the BBC’s correspondent in Islamabad, as well as reporting from Afghanistan and Iran. He established the BBC office in Amman, Jordan in 1994.
