Siddharth Yadav Facts
- Siddharth had inherited his passion for cricket from his father, Shravan, who dreamed of representing India, but ended up being just a net bowler. Later, Shravan, who runs a grocery store, gave up his business to train his son in the sport. He would often close his shop at 2 pm, take Siddharth to a nearby ground, and throw him away by 6 pm.
- His friends and teammates gave him the nickname ‘Jayasuriya’ as they felt that his game was reminiscent of the legendary Sri Lankan cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya.
- He could not make it to the playing XI in any of India’s 5 matches in 2021 ACC Under-19 Asia Cup And this trend continued in India’s first match of 2022. ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cupagainst South Africa. Soon after that match, 5 other members of the Indian team including India captain Yash Dhull and Siddarth were tested positive for COVID-19. This meant that all those players had to miss the next (and last) 2 matches of the group stage against Ireland and Uganda.
- Despite missing so many first-choice players, India managed to win those games with ease, top their group and qualify for the quarter-finals. All members of India’s squad that were affected by COVID-19 had recovered in time for that match against Bangladesh, and regular members of the team’s playing XI regained their places.
- However, Nishant Sindhu, who was picked by the team management to captain India in the matches against Ireland and Uganda, has now tested positive for COVID-19. It had opened a place in the middle order which went to Siddharth and he made his youth ODI debut in that match. However, this would be the only match he would play in the tournament as Nishant had recovered enough to reclaim his place in the squad for matches against Australia in the semi-final and England in the final.
